Triphala – The Non-laxative Laxative!
Triphala means 3 fruits. Triphala is one of the most famous preparations from the Ayurvedic formulary. Traditionally used for maintaining a healthy digestive tract. Use when there are signs of sluggishness, constipation, bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain and indigestion. It is also used to clear cough with phlegm and to strengthen the lungs. It is used for skin inflammation and acne.
It is a formula that is tridoshic, everybody can benefit from it. Triphala is a mild laxative that detoxes but also, and that is what is special with this formulation, is a tonic for the whole body.
The taste is really strong and unusual. Capsules and tablets are easier to ingest and are available from the Temple Herbs and Ayurveda.
Triphala is one of he most famous preparations used in Ayurvedic Medicine. It contains the ‘tree fruits’ of Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki which are traditionally used for maintaining a healthy digestive tract.
Triphala acts as a complete body cleanser, initiating slow, gentle, deep tissue detoxification while supporting digestion, removing toxins from the colon and liver and cleansing the blood. Although it is sometimes classified as a laxative it does not cause dependency, nor does it induce peristalsis.
Tonics and building herbal formulations are effective when the tissue is not covered with toxins. If tonics like Ginsengs are taken in toxic conditions, they will result in increased toxins. Ayurveda teaches that before any building or toning therapies, cleansing with herbs like triphala is of paramount importance.
Triphala is used not only for its deep cleansing effects but also for its unique parallel tonification and rejuvenation qualities. It is balanced or ‘tridoshic’. As a result, it is one of the rare formulas that is recommended by Ayurveda for most individuals as a regular or seasonal ritual. A small amount will generally tighten the bowel, while a large amount will open the bowel.
Triphala may be of value in the following conditions:
Anaemia, flatulence, bacterial infection, food poisoning, gastritis, colic, general debility, colitis, haemorrhoids, colon cancer, hepatic dysfunction, diabetes, hepatitis, constipation, indigestion, leaky gut, symbiosis, mal-absorption, dysentery, oxidative stress, chronic fatigue, parasites, toxins (ama), skin inflammations.
